Thai 14th - 15th Century Sawankhalok Covered Box (fruit stem)
This stoneware box was made during the 14th - 15th centuries at one of the Sawankhalok kilns. The top of the cover is modeled into the form of a fruit stem. The underglaze decoration comprises various panels of geometric patterns and lines. The surface is coated in a finely-crackled translucent greenish-blue glaze.
Quite often such Thai boxes have mis-matched covers; there is no doubt whatsoever that this is the original cover for this box.
Diameter 9.5 cm (3.75 inches). Condition is very good with just three minor “nibbles” to the edge of the vulnerable inner rim; there is no repair or restoration.
