Chinese Kangxi Blue & White Porcelain Dish (Kraak)

This fine dish was made around 1680 at the famous Jingdezhen kilns, during the Kangxi reign (1662 - 1722) of the Qing Dynasty. It is decorated in underglaze blue of good colour. The decoration to the centre panel features a grasshopper in a garden surrounded by flower blossoms. Surrounding this are more panels variously containing geometric, flowers and precious objects. To the underside are floral scrolls and a tripod mark within double rings.

This dish was recovered from a shipwreck by Captain Michael Hatcher of "Hatcher Cargo" fame.

Diameter 21 cm (8.25 inches). The glaze is, of course, a little "frosted" and stained from long submersion in seawater but is otherwise in fine condition with no restoration or repair and a good ring when tapped. It is a fine example of its type.

Note: whilst decorated in the "kraak" style of the mid 17th century, dishes such as this dating to the late 17th century are not actually true "kraak" wares. A full explanation is given in the fine book "Kraak Porcelain" by Maura Rinaldi, a book we highly recommend.
