Rare Chinese Ming Dynasty Blue & White Porcelain Covered Box
This rare and unusual small covered box was made during the Wanli reign (1573 - 1620) of the Ming Dynasty. It has a conical-shaped cover and is decorated with an underglaze blue floral pattern.
Diameter 5.25 cm. It is in good condition with no restoration or repair.
This item was recovered from a shipwreck by Captain Michael Hatcher of "Hatcher Cargo" fame
For information we show an almost identical example from the fine book "Vietnamese and Chinese Ceramics Used in the Japanese Tea Ceremony" by Hiromu Honda and Noriki Shimazu, a book we highly recommend (ISBN 0195886070). Here they suggest this form represents a pine cone and is mainly known from Japanese collections.
