Fine Chinese Ming Dynasty Blue & White Porcelain Dish (15th Century)

This porcelain dish was made during the 15th century. It is quite "heavily-potted" and has a foliate rim and a moulded ridged cavetto to the underside. The central design features the mythical creature, the qilin (kylin). There is a wide border comprising geometric patterns interspersed with Chinese characters. Interestingly, the colour of the underglaze cobalt blue decoration varies from an intense blue to almost back, a result of uneven conditions in the kiln during firing. It is coated in a particularly glossy crackled glaze, the crackles penetrating the body at the rim in places. There is minor "chipping" to the edge of the inner foot in places, undoubtedly caused during manufacture.

Diameter 19.5 cm (7.5 inches). A fine example in fine condition with no restoration or repair.
