Fine & Rare Chinese Ming Dynasty Blue & White Kraak Porcelain Dish

This very rare and unusual fine quality moulded "kraak" porcelain dish was made toward the end of the Wanli reign (1573 - 1620) of the Ming Dynasty at the famous Jingdezhen kilns. It has a scalloped cavetto and the underglaze pattern is a deep blue. The central design features a butterfly and a grasshopper on a rock within an attractive landscape. The pattern surrounding the cavetto is most unusual and dishes with such a border are described in, what many collectors consider to be the kraak "bible", "Kraak Porcelain" by Maura Rinaldi, as "Dishes with this type of border are so rare, and the information so scarce, that it seems unnecessary to give them a specific border number" (other kraak dishes usually having a specific and numbered border type). The underside of the dish is decorated quite simply with a scrolling pattern surrounding the foot ring. As is common with such "kraak" porcelain, there is some "fritting" to the glaze at the rim edge and small [pieces of kiln grit embedded within the glaze around the foot ring.

Diameter 20.5 cm (8 inches). This dish has a good deep ring when tapped and is free from any repair or restoration; it is in fine condition.
