Fine Chinese Tang Dynasty Sancai Glazed Pottery Groom Figure (Published & with Oxford TL Test)

This fine pottery figure was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906) and represents a foreign male attendant or groom. It is "heavily-potted" and made from a cream-coloured pottery that is relatively highly-fired. The body is coated in very finely-crackled green and amber glazes.

Tang glazed items such as this are usually referred to as "sancai glazed" pieces. "Sancai" refers to three colours of glaze. Although this figure is essentially coated in only two different colours of glaze, there is in fact a third colour, just splash of straw-yellow to part of the head that may well have dripped onto it from another item during firing !

It is of a good size with a height of 29 cm (11.5 inches). Of course there is minor surface wear, and a couple of kiln scars where the glaze has run during firing, but overall it is in exceptional condition with no sign of any restoration or repair; a fine example.

This figure is from the American Schloss Collection and is illustrated in the 1979 book, "Ancient Chinese Ceramic Sculpture from Han through Tang - The Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Ezekiel Schloss". The Schloss Collection was accumulated from the 1950s onwards. Although we are not in possession of that book, we show for information a scan of the relevant page from that book showing this figure.

Furthermore, this figure comes with a Thermoluminescence Analysis Report from Oxford Authentication Ltd., the only testers of ancient pottery accepted by all major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide, and their report that will accompany this item is shown with our images; this confirms the date of manufacture as "between 900 and 1500 years ago".
