This fine and rare stoneware ewer was made during the 9th to 10th century (from the end of the Tang Dynasty AD 608 - 916, the Five Dynasties period AD 907 - 960, to the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1127), most likely a product of one of the Guangdong kilns. Both inner and outer surfaces are coated in a very finely-crackled olive-green glaze. The base and extreme lower body remain unglazed where the exposed stoneware body has fired from a pale grey to a dark reddish-brown. Kiln scars to the base and rim show that these wares were stacked on top of each in the kiln during firing. This ewer has a sturdy short spout and a loop handle, the surface of which is pleasingly decorated with a scrolling pattern.
Height 15 cm (6 inches). This ewer is in fine condition and has no restoration or repair.
For information: this ewer is part of a modest yet very interesting private English collection of Chinese antiquities acquired during the 1990s that we recently acquired.
