LARGE Chinese Neolithic Pottery Jar - Caiyuan Culture (c. 2600 - 2200 BC)

This large and impressive pottery jar was made over 4,000 years ago by peoples of the Caiyuan Culture (c. 2600 - 2200 BC) and has been excavated from the Ningxia Autonomous Region in the north of China. It is relatively highly-fired and has been fired to a very pleasing pale yellowish-brown colour. The upper surface has been burnished and is smooth to the touch. The lower surface has been simply yet effectively decorated with bands of impressed lines that gently spiral downwards. Around the edge of the shoulder are three short applied decorative strips.

Height 40.5 cm (16 inches), diameter 31.5 cm (12.5 inches). Condition is very good. A section of the mouth has been broken out and re-stuck and there is what appears to be a small firing defect on the edge of the shoulder. Overall, a fine and rare large example in very good condition.
