This tall and impressive pottery "stick" figure was made during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8), more specifically, the 2nd century BC. It is "heavily-potted" and made from a dense fine-grained pottery that is relatively highly-fired. It has been "cold painted" with a pink/brown flesh-coloured pigment on top of which the facial features have been picked-out in black and red pigments. These figures were made in separate sections, head, body, legs. The parts were then luted together prior to firing and then cold painted after firing. Note the detail of the facial features and the hairstyle, worn with a top knot.
Various types of "stick" figures have been excavated, although none have arms; it is believed that such figures originally had wooden articulated arms that have, of course, long since rotted away.
This is a tall figure with a height of 56.5 cm (22.25 inches). Realistically there is most likely some degree of repair and/or restoration, although none is obvious and any such repairs have clearly been performed to a professional standard. This is a fine example of its type.
As with many of our finer and rarer items, we have had this figure tested by Oxford Authentications, the ONLY testers of ancient pottery accepted by all major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide, and the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report that confirms the antiquity of this figure is shown with our images.
