This pottery model of a musician was made during the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25 - 220) and excavated from Sichuan province. It is made from a reddish pottery and quite "heavily-potted". A variety of figures of this general type are well documented. They are often musicians and entertainers, and were made in a variety of sizes, the smallest being around 15cm in height. This particularly example is much larger with a height of 30.5 cm (12 inches).
The figure is kneeling and is in the act of playing a drum and has much more detail than some examples of this general type. Note the detail of the clothing on both front and back of the figure; also the head gear and the smiling face, typical of many such Sichuan pottery figures of this general type.
In places on both inner and outer surface there are "calcified" burial deposits. It is in exceptional condition with no sign of any restoration or repair.
