This attractive porcelain dish was made during the Wanli reign (1573 - 1620) of the Ming Dynasty. It has a foliate rim and has been very attractively decorated in underglaze blue of very good colour featuring a variation of the "two deer in a garden" pattern. Although this pattern is well-known, in addition, around the rim, are various leaf & foliage patterns as well as three birds, a rare feature on such dishes. The underside is also nicely, although more simply decorated.
This dish is in very good condition with no repair or restoration. However, there are faint hairlines within the footring that can be seen on both sides (see magnified images), yet the dish still has good ring when tapped; these hairlines were possibly caused during the cooling process of manufacture. Notwithstanding these hairlines, this is a very fine example of this type of kraak dish. Diameter 20.25 cm.
