Rare Chinese Northern Song / Jin Dynasty Twin-Handled Jar

This rare and unusual jar was made at one of the northern kilns during the 11th - 13th century. It is coated both inside and out in a thick glaze that varies in colour from chocolate-brown to black. The glaze fall short of the base on both the inner and outer surfaces. The outer body is decorated with a fluted wall and lightly incised horizontal lines that surround the jar at its shoulder. On opposing sides to the rim are two sturdy loop handles. The inner surface is ridged with horizontal lines. The highly-fired porcelaneous body has a high ring to it when tapped.

Height 15 cm, diameter 19 cm. Condition is very good with no restoration or repair. There is a very fine hairline, very difficult to see, that extends across the base and up part of the sides of the jar. However, despite this, the jar has a high-pitched ring when tapped and we believe this most likely occurred during manufacture, possibly during the cooling process.

This fine and rare jar comes from a private English collection that was established during the 1980s & 90s.

Note: the wooden stand shown in one of our images is not included.
