Chinese Ming Dynasty Blue & White Kraak Porcelain Dish (Deer & Birds)

This attractive porcelain dish was made during the Wanli reign (1573 - 1620) of the Ming Dynasty. It has a foliate rim and has been very attractively decorated in underglaze blue featuring a variation of the "two deer in a garden" pattern. Although this pattern is well-known, in addition, around the rim, are flower blossoms and two birds, a rare feature of such dishes. Furthermore, the underside pattern also includes two birds.

"Kraak" porcelain often has minor "fritting" to the glaze at the rim edge, as does this example, and sometimes kiln grit embedded within the glaze on the underside - this dish certainly has its fair share of kiln grit. It is in fine condition with no restoration or repair and a good ring when tapped. Diameter 20 cm.
