This impressive large porcelain dish was made in the late 16th century, during the Wanli reign (1573 - 1620) of the Ming Dynasty, and was recovered from the cargo of the "Binh Thuan" wreck. It is of the type known as "Swatow" or "Zhangzhou" ware. It is coated in a thick crackled glaze, the bold underglaze blue decoration featuring in the centre, a standing phoenix, surrounded by various floral patterns including panels containing bamboo and peach trees. The outer wall is decorated with simple lines and floral patterns. The sand/grit adhering around the foot ring is typical of this type of ware, the dish having been stood on sand in the kiln during firing.
The "Binh Thuan" wreck was dated to c.1608 and its cargo, including many examples of "Swatow" ware, was sold at Christie's in Melbourne in March 2004. Most of the dishes sold at that sale were much smaller in size with many having suffered damage.
This is truely an exceptional piece from the Binh Thuan wreck, a much rarer large example of its type with a diameter of 37.5 cm (14.75 inches) in fine condition and free from any restoration or repair.
