Chinese Neolithic Painted Pottery Jar - Machang (c. 2300 - 2000 BC)

This pottery jar was made over 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase (c. 2300 - 2000 BC) of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. It has a wide flared mouth and is relatively highly-fired making it more durable than some lower-fired examples. Both inner and outer upper surfaces have been coated in a reddish-brown wash on top of which have been painted geometric patterns in a dark fired-on mineral-based pigment. This bowl is of quite a rare form: most

Diameter 13 cm, height 9.5 cm. A nice example in good condition: there is some surface wear and minor chips to the edges, as should reasonably be accepted in view of its great age. Most importantly, this example has all original colour and is free from any restoration or repair.
