This impressive and highly decorative pottery tile was made during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). It depicts an ox with a bell around its neck, clouds and the sun, and would have been one of a frieze on a wall comprising several similar tiles. It has been coated in various glazes of attractive colours. By their very nature, the majority of such tiles have been repaired (including most examples on display in public museums): although not immediately obvious, this tile has been broken into two pieces and re-stuck across its centre, also signs of repair to the horns.
Length 59 cm (23.25 inches), height 20.5 cm (8 inches), weight 6.15 kg (13.5 lbs).
Note: we originally sold this to a private collector nearly ten years ago and have recently been lucky enough to buy it back.
