Fine Large Chinese Warring States Impressed Pottery Jar + TL Test

This very rare large and impressive pottery jar was made during the Warring States period (475 - 221 BC). It is made from a hard high-fired pottery. The body widens as it goes up from the base to a horizontal shoulder and then into quite a wide but short neck with a flared mouth. The body is covered with repeated impressed geometric patterns, a smaller design to the upper body and a larger design to the lower body.

Height 44 cm (17.5 inches). This fine jar is an exceptional example, not only because of its large size, but also because of its condition with just a small chip to the outer edge of the flared rim and a small repair also to the rim edge, that is not at all obvious.

This jar has been in our personal collection for several years, not previously offered for sale. In 2019, as with many of our rarer and finer items, we had it tested by Oxford Authentications, the ONLY testers of ancient pottery accepted by ALL major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide, and the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report that will accompany this jar is shown with our pictures above; this confirms the date of manufacture as "between 1600 and 2600 years ago".

Note: impressed pottery jars from the Warring States period have become increasingly collected in recent years and are now very difficult to find.
