This unusually-shaped large pottery jar was made over 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase (c.2300 - 2000 BC) of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. It is relatively highly-fired and made from a pale yellowish-brown pottery. It has a fairly wide flat base, wide body and tall cylindrical neck. There is one loop handle joined at the shoulder and neck base, and a small protruding "lug" on the other side at the waist. The upper body and neck have been decorated in bold geometric patterns using two different coloured (purple and black) fired-on mineral-based pigments.
Height 31 cm, diameter of body 28 cm. Overall condition is good, although there is some surface wear, an old chip to the end of the "lug" and the flared part of the mouth has had some restoration.
