Rare Chinese Yuan Dynasty Burnished Black Pottery Groom Figure (32.5cm)

This impressive and attractive pottery figure was made during the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368). Such figures from the Yuan Dynasty are very distinctive and are particularly rare and desirable. The surface of such Yuan figures is typically fired to grey, or almost black, and sometimes, as in this case, burnished to a smooth finish.

This figure represents a groom or possibly a merchant. The clothing is distinctly Mongol with the belted tunic and boots. The right arm is raised, the fist clenched as if holding something, possibly the reins of a horse. The left arm is held back with the hand enclosed within the long sleeve. Note also the fine detail of the face and the headgear.

This figure is of a good size with a height of 32.5 cm. This figure is relatively low-fired and there are signs of repair to the lower body and base, and signs that the head and arms have been re-stuck. Despite this, however, we hope our images show that this remains an impressive example in good presentable condition.

This figure has been in our private collection of at least fifteen years and not previously offered for sale.

Black pottery Yuan Dynasty items are not widely published. However, similar examples can be seen in two publications of private collections: "Celestial Horses & Long Sleeve Dancers" by Robert Jacobsen and "Horses for Eternity" by Victor Choi.
