Chinese Early Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Horse / Pony

This attractive pottery model of a saddled horse, or pony, was made during the early part of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is one of a group of four we acquired several years ago, all clearly from the same location. It is quite "heavily-potted" and made from a reddish pottery. It has been "cold-painted" in a base coat of a creamy-white pigment with various other coloured pigments applied on top. Note especially the attention to detail of the bridle parts, its eyes and the end of its mane between its ears. The horse stands upright with its head turned, as though quizzically, a little to its left. It is not the largest or most detailed Tang horse, but it really does have a certain charm to it!

Height 22 cm. There is surface wear and some loss of pigment as should, of course, be expected. It is in very good condition with any possible repair having been performed to a professional level. It is available for inspection here at our gallery in Brighton.

For information in our images we show that TL test certificate. However, please note that this particular example has NOT been TL tested; it is simply not economic to have every item tested, although that can be arranged for an additional fee.
