Chinese Northern Dynasties Painted Pottery Horse & Rider

This attractive pottery model of a cloaked and hooded rider was made in the 6th Century during either the Eastern Wei Dynasty (AD 534 - 550) or the following Northern Qi Dynasty (AD 550 - 577). Pottery horses from this period have a distinct style different to the more common and later Tang Dynasty equivalents.

It has been made from a fine-grained grey pottery that has been "cold painted" in a creamy-white pigment with details picked out in red and black pigments. Note especially the detail of the rider's clothing and head gear.

Height 29 cm. It is in very good condition with any possible repairs having been performed to a professional level. It is available for inspection here at our gallery in Brighton.

This horse is one of a group of four from the same location we acquired several years ago. To represent the group we had one example tested by Oxford Authentications, the ONLY testers of ancient pottery accepted by ALL major dealers, auction houses and museums worldwide. For information only, we show the Thermoluminescence Analysis Report confirmation the date of manufacture of the tested horse as "between 1000 and 1600 years ago". Each horse from the group is being sold individually. The horse that was tested is stock number MC024. Please note that this particular horse (MC027) has has NOT been TL tested, although that can be arranged for an additional fee.
