Rare Chinese Northern Wei Dynasty Painted Pottery Lady
This rare female pottery figure was made during the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386 - 534). It has been made in a two-piece mould with the joins clearly visible down each side. Good traces of the original surface pigments remain. Note also the hairstyle, arranged in cross-shaped coiffures, presumably the latest fashion in the Northern Dynasties period !
Height 25.5 cm (10 inches). There are signs that the head has been broken and re-stuck at the neck but that is the extent of any repair or restoration; a very rare figure in fine condition.
Very similar pottery figures of women with identical hairstyles have been found in Northern Wei Dynasty tombs in Xi'an, Shaanxi province (see our last picture for information).
