Originally deaccessioned from a Gallery in the United States these two Hirado dishes depict different imaginary episodes of the legend of the Scholars in the Bamboo Grove. This Chinese story was long ago adopted by the Japanese and over the years has frequently provided subject matter for the decoration of ceramics. One dish shows two scholars and the other three scholars. Typical Hirado decoration in soft under-glaze blue on a fine grained white porcelain body. Mark: unmarked Period: late Edo Period, 19th century Size: height 3 cm, diameter 19 cm Condition: Fine
