A striking Bizen stoneware tokkuri (sake flask) with rare incised geometric decoration of rectangles within rectangles. The surface undulates with scenery composed of different colours and textures and effects, some accidental and some intended, ranging from matte deep brown to a rich shiny deep brick red. It feels wonderfully tactile in the hands, a pleasure to pour sake from. Mark: Single character impressed “dai” mark within a rectangle to the base. Origin: Bizen, Japan. Period: Late Edo to early Meiji Period, 19th Century. Size: 17.5cm high, 8.5cm wide on the diagonal. Condition: fine.
