A beautifully painted underglaze blue and white Hirado porcelain covered bowl decorated with alternating roundels of calligraphic inscriptions and landscape, against an extremely complex ground of karakusa scrolls and other decorative motifs in the sumi hajiki (ink repel) technique. Provenance: this covered bowl was exhibited in the exhibition “The Japanese Aesthetic” by the Ceramic and Glass Circle of Victoria in 2006-2007. Mark: “Hirado Kasho” in underglaze blue to the base of both the bowl and cover. Origin: Hirado, Japan. Period: Meiji Period, circa 1890s. Size: 10.3cm diameter, 5.6cm high. Condition: fine.
