A good porcelain guinomi (sake cup) decorated to interior with underglaze blue Chinese character to the center, and to the exterior with a rich mid tone iron brown glaze by Kiyomizu Rokubei III (1820-1883). Rare to find in the West, Rokubei III’s wares are always characterised by an unflinching late Edo literati aesthetic, always bold yet elegant. This would be a wonderful little Edo period sake cup to drink from. Mark: painted underglaze blue mark for Rokubei III to the base. Origin: Kyoto, Japan. Period: Late Edo to early Meiji Period, circa mid 19th Century. Size: 7cm diameter, 3cm high. Condition: fine.
