An underglaze blue porcelain chawan decorated with three formal sixteen petal kikumon (chrysanthemum crest) of the Emperor of Japan surrounded by butterflies and birds, by one of the 19th century members of the Tsuji Hitachi lineage of Arita. The Tsuji Hitachi lineage among others were commissioned to make works for the Imperial family to be used when the Emperor stayed as a guest in other families' households, and would be left behind as gifts. Mark: None. Often works commissioned by the Imperial family were unmarked. Origin: Arita, Japan. Period: Late Edo or Meiji Period, 19th Century. Size: 9.6cm diameter, 4.8cm high.
Condition: fine, but with two very small glaze flakes to the inner footrim.
