This charming piece is a tableau of Nomadic life. One side of the saddle cloth depicts a small monastery building, with a rider on horseback on the left and a Tibetan mastiff with characteristic red collar on the right along with a riderless horse. Silk embroidery on a thick indigo-blue cotton ground. In the center is a pair of peacocks and four "rain dragons" in the ground. The border has four phoenixes and eight water dragons. The style is similar to some silk embroideries made for export. This is due to the period. Qing Dynasty, probably Kangxi period. 17th century. An extremely rare fragment of a large-loom brocade throne carpet. There are 8 borders indicating a high use. Silks like this were made on a large loom and are usually about 8 feet wide. The silk is very thick lampas weave typical of such pieces. The quality of the weaving and design is of the highest level of workmanship, and though it is a fragment, it retains the elegance of its original form. Two Ming Dynasty embroidery fragments, one on a yellow twill ground, and the other on a white damask ground. The yellow piece portrays birds in the branches of a plum tree surrounded by blossoms.
