This rare large Buddha head was used in processions in the Kathmandu Valley during the Samyak festival of alms-giving. It would have been raised on a pole and draped with clothing. The festival is held in the three ancient cities of Kathmandu Valley. In Kathmandu it is once every 12 years, every 5 years in Lalitpur, and annually in Bhaktapur. Dipankara is the Buddha of the past, who had recognized Gautama Buddha in a past life and told him that he would, in the future, become a Buddha himself. There is a hatch in the back for placing prayers inside the head. The piece has been damaged over time and one ear is missing part of the lobe. It once had an insect problem but was treated with fumigation and freezing by Spink & Son in London in the 1980’s. There has not been any recurrance since treatment. c. 16th century.
