A completely original Tibetan ceremonial drum, two sided, used in a Buddhist monastery’s ceremonial orchestra, as well as for the music accompanying ritual dances, and chants. The sides of this wooden drum are decorated in gold lacquerwork depicting two dragons, one on each side, among clouds. Both three-clawed dragons are grasping jewels. The wooden handle carved with dorge, lotuses and knots has a wonderful patina. Unusually, this drum still has the original skin. The lacquer, handle, and skin are all in excellent condition. There is a similar drum in the Metropolitan Museum. (Dimensions: Height: 56 in/142 cm Width: 24 in/61 cm Depth: 8 in/20.3 cm Weight: 6.6 lb/3 kg)
