Rare Staffordshire Historical Portrait Figures of General Lord Kitchener, of Khartoum fame, on horse facing right, in peaked cap and military uniform, and figure of Major-General Sir John French. Ca. 1900. From a special collection of British military figures and statesmen. Speaking of the British Raj - have you seen the recent documentary about Queen Victoria and her empire? Very finely executed in couched (overlay) gold metallic thread and satin stitch. The fukusa shows on cloud and wave ground a sennin astride a long-tailed tortoise below a crane in flight. Very handsome cylindrical box with lid, black lacquer exterior and red lacquer interior, resting on four supports ending in legs. The body with horizontal ribs, metal fittings etched with hexagons. Similar boxes are known as hokai, and were used to store the shells for kai-awase, the "shell matching game." Dark brown lacquer exterior with red lacquer interior. Khmer stone fragment of Shiva on his mount Nandin, of gray sandstone. Dramatic profile. The provenance for this piece is an origin in Phanom Rung, which is now in Thailand but part of the Khmer Empire during the 10th to 13th century. Measurements: H 15 1/2", L 22". An antique pair of exceptional Chinese stone lions, the female with cub compliments the male with ball. Traces of color pigment. Well carved and executed in great detail. Rare.
