Rare Chinese black ground silk gauze skirt embroidered in couched gold-wrapped thread and satin stitch with a band of eight dragon roundels of dragons pursuing flaming pearls amidst clouds, all above more dragons in similar pursuit, and above cresting waves and lishui stripe; the top of the skirt with a pendant flap (re) also with dragon design; together with a border of floral pattern in tightly woven metallic-wrapped thread. Fine condition. Late 19th century. A chaofu was part of the most formal style of Qing court costume.
