This Barr, Flight and Barr bowl is painted in underglaze blue as the base for the "Japan" fence pattern. For some reason it did not get to the on glaze decoration stage. It is impressed with the Barr, Flight and Barr mark of 1804-13 although Henry Sandon in his book "Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain" dates the pattern to C1810-15. It is 172mm in diameter and stands 74mm high. . There is a small area inside the bowl where there is a faint discolouration and there are marks to the bottom of the...

With a tap at both ends, this very attractive majolica spirit barrel would have once stood on a stand and held two different spirits. Its rather more subtle majolica palette, indicates to me that this piece is of European manufacture. The only mark is an impressed B, but I have been unable to attribute it to any one maker. The length is 153 mm (6 inches) and it measures 127 mm (5 inches) in diameter. It is in very good condition apart from the loss of one of its pewter taps and the stand. C1890.

This gourd shaped vase is from Doulton Burslem's Corolian Ware line that was made from 1891-1902 and came from the studio of Robert Allen, a very talented designer and painter. The decoration was achieved using the sgraffito method, where the vase was first coated in the rich cobalt blue ground, then the ground was removed with dry brushes exposing the white body to form the flowers. It has been done most delicately and the raised gilt highlights, another Allen speciality, were then added. The p...

This Royal Doulton ewer was decorated by Bessie Newbery, who started at Doulton in 1882. She was an assistant to many of the great Doulton artists, and during the period 1914-24 she designed her own pieces. On this classical Greek shaped ewer, she has produced a tube lined decoration of a large rose and a rosebud, which together with the foliage, sits on a mottled blue ground. The design number is 7816. It stands 293 mm (11.5 inches) to the top of the handle, and is in very good condition. C 191...

A very attractive salt glazed stoneware jug from the Doulton Lambeth factory. It is decorated with a rather uncommon Egyptian theme. A pharaoh's head forms the spout and the wings of Horus spread either side of the base of the handle. These wings and all the figures in the central frieze are what is known as sprigged or sprigging. Clay is pressed into a very shallow mould, gently teased out, and then carefully applied by hand to the body of the jug, before the piece is fired and glazed. There ar...

This sterling silver handled paper knife features a blade of Mother-of-pearl. Due to the fragility of the blade, these are much rarer than those with more durable blades. Made in Birmingham in 1908, it is in excellent condition, with only a couple of very small nicks in the blade to mar its beauty. Unfortunately my photography skills don't show the blade to its best advantage, but it does possess lovely colour and figure. The whole piece is 255mm long and 20mm wide at the very end of the blade.
