A lovely pair of Japanese Satsuma tea canisters. They are decorated on all four sides, and the lids, with hand enamelled scenes of wildflowers and butterflies, on a buff ground with pale pink and gilt features. They stand 143 mm (5.75 inches) high and are 127 mm (5 inches) square. Both canisters have retained their inner lid, but one of the outer lids has been repaired. There are also a small number of very, very minor nibbles to the bottom edges. They are unmarked and would date from the 1890's...

This Doulton Burslem jug was issued in 1898 to commemorate the death of William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898). Gladstone was an English politician who served as Prime Minister on four occasions. Made of parian, a type of porcelain, and given a vellum coloured ground, it features a portrait of Gladstone on one side and a replica of his coat of arms on the other, and finished off with gilding to the rim and base. It would appear that the jug was designed some time before Gladstone's death as both th...

This beautifully made wooden paper knife features as the handle, a violin scroll end and peg box. Joined to this is the long blade which is probably walnut, or possibly olive wood. Whether the handle is made from the scroll end of a violin, I don't know-perhaps it was made for a musician or a music lover. The length is 396 mm (15.5 inches) and it is 32 mm (1.25 inches) wide where the handle joins the blade. It is in wonderful condition. Datewise, probably the last quarter of the nineteenth cen...

This good quality sterling silver card case was made by Edward Smith of Birmingham in 1854. Both sides are decorated with the same richly engraved pattern where the centre panel features a cornucopia of fruit and the surrounding panels depict flowers and foliage. Smith was a good maker, noted for making card cases decorated with engine turning and engraving. On the front, immediately below the cornucopia, is a family crest above the initials "MA". The crest is possibly that for the Bartlett or B...

This lovely Doulton Burslem Luscian ware vase was painted by Charles Hart senior who worked at Doulton for about 47 years, from 1880 - 1927. Charles Hart senior was a noted painter of flowers, fish and game birds, and his son, Charles Hart junior also joined Doulton's as a painter. Luscian Ware was a Doulton product where the decoration was painted on glaze, but with skilfull glazing and firing techniques, the colours sank into the glaze, giving a delicate, soft effect. Standing 240 mm, or 9.5 i...

Internally the lids to the two compartments are also veneered with rosewood and boxwood and the compartments have retained a lot of the original zinc lining. It measures 207 mm (8 1/8 th inches) in width, 118 mm (4 5/8 ths inches) in depth and stands 130 mm (5 1/8 th inches) high.
