The raised decoration on this impressive majolica jardiniere was formed in separate moulds and then applied by hand. This is called sprigging. After these sprigs were fired onto the body they were then glazed with the majolica glazes. Possibly French, it carries the number 2016 incised into the base, and a small impressed mark. I have been unable to attribute it to a maker. The jardiniere stands 395 mm (15.5 inches) high and has a diameter of 440 mm (17.5 inches). It weighs in at 8.75 kgs (19.3 ...

A very attractive hand painted and gilded small Royal Worcester pot-pourri and cover using the old Hadley Worcester shape. The body has two angular handles and stands on four curled feet and the lid is pierced to allow the scent to escape. Both the shape(187) and the painting of pink Cyclamen(pattern 65) are not that common. The fractional number shown on the base indicates the decoration. The number 187 above the line is the shape number, and below the line 65 indicates the pattern-in this case...

This Minton jardiniere is a lovely example of their "Secessionist" range, which was designed by Leon Solon and John Wadsworth. The pattern is number 71 and the raised borders were applied by a technique known as tube lining or slip trailing. When the the coloured glazes ran during the firing, it gave the effect of a piece of individual art pottery, which it is, in effect, as each piece will be slightly different. It stands 260 mm (10.25 inches) high and has a diameter of 287 mm (11.25 inches) at...
