These two pieces of Gorham sterling silver flatware are decorated with the Versailles pattern, which was introduced in 1888. The butter knife, or possibly a pickle knife, is 165 mm (6.5 inches) in length and weighs 34 gms. The spoon measures 153 mm (6 inches) in length, 38 mm (1.5 inches) across the bowl, and weighs 29 gms. Both pieces are in good condition, but the spoon appears to have had something dropped across the bowl, very slightly distorting the edges. Both pieces carry the Gorham mark ...

With a tap at both ends, this very attractive majolica spirit barrel would have once stood on a stand and held two different spirits. Its rather more subtle majolica palette, indicates to me that this piece is of European manufacture. The only mark is an impressed B, but I have been unable to attribute it to any one maker. The length is 153 mm (6 inches) and it measures 127 mm (5 inches) in diameter. It is in very good condition apart from the loss of one of its pewter taps and the stand. C1890.

The raised decoration on this impressive majolica jardiniere was formed in separate moulds and then applied by hand. This is called sprigging. After these sprigs were fired onto the body they were then glazed with the majolica glazes. Possibly French, it carries the number 2016 incised into the base, and a small impressed mark. I have been unable to attribute it to a maker. The jardiniere stands 395 mm (15.5 inches) high and has a diameter of 440 mm (17.5 inches). It weighs in at 8.75 kgs (19.3 ...

This beautifully made wooden paper knife features as the handle, a violin scroll end and peg box. Joined to this is the long blade which is probably walnut, or possibly olive wood. Whether the handle is made from the scroll end of a violin, I don't know-perhaps it was made for a musician or a music lover. The length is 396 mm (15.5 inches) and it is 32 mm (1.25 inches) wide where the handle joins the blade. It is in wonderful condition. Datewise, probably the last quarter of the nineteenth cen...

Each of the four sides features a slightly raised medallion decorated with hand painted scenes and ringed with hand tooled gilding. It stands on four square gilded feet and each corner is topped with a small gilded pointed finial. The height is 127...

This Minton jardiniere is a lovely example of their "Secessionist" range, which was designed by Leon Solon and John Wadsworth. The pattern is number 71 and the raised borders were applied by a technique known as tube lining or slip trailing. When the the coloured glazes ran during the firing, it gave the effect of a piece of individual art pottery, which it is, in effect, as each piece will be slightly different. It stands 260 mm (10.25 inches) high and has a diameter of 287 mm (11.25 inches) at...

This large reverse painted glass is decorated with a scene of birds, flowers and a butterfly. The glass has been etched and engraved on the back, then painted and gilded and mounted in a stained pine frame. This gives you a clean surface and ensures that the decoration cannot be damaged with usage. The brass handles are replacements as the originals had been removed and the tray hung on a wall as a painting. The initials in the bottom right are DGI. It is 625 mm (24.75 inches) long, including th...

This Royal Doulton ewer was decorated by Bessie Newbery, who started at Doulton in 1882. She was an assistant to many of the great Doulton artists, and during the period 1914-24 she designed her own pieces. On this classical Greek shaped ewer, she has produced a tube lined decoration of a large rose and a rosebud, which together with the foliage, sits on a mottled blue ground. The design number is 7816. It stands 293 mm (11.5 inches) to the top of the handle, and is in very good condition. C 191...

This Doulton Burslem vase features a very pretty hand painted scene of a lady holding an armful of roses. It was painted by Frederick Sutton, who was employed at Doulton Burslem from about 1898 through to 1913. He came to Doulton from Royal Worcester, and prior to that he had been at Minton and Coalport as a painter. The vase stands 254 mm ( 10 inches) high and is approximately 100 mm ( 4 inches) at its widest. There are one or two very, very small scuffs of the paintwork to the side and rear, o...

This lovely Doulton Burslem Luscian ware vase was painted by Charles Hart senior who worked at Doulton for about 47 years, from 1880 - 1927. Charles Hart senior was a noted painter of flowers, fish and game birds, and his son, Charles Hart junior also joined Doulton's as a painter. Luscian Ware was a Doulton product where the decoration was painted on glaze, but with skilfull glazing and firing techniques, the colours sank into the glaze, giving a delicate, soft effect. Standing 240 mm, or 9.5 i...

Decorated in the taste of the Aesthetic Movement, this Doulton Lambeth hand painted flask vase features an exuberance of flowers. On one side, a large spray of daisies sits on a dark green ground, whilst on the other, sunflowers peek out from a brown roundel, all on a graduated green ground. Sunflowers were a major motif of the Aesthetic Movement. Impressed into the base is the Doulton Lambeth Faience stamp, and next to that are two artist's marks. The F V mark is for an artist whose name is not...

This large copper tray was hand beaten by John Pearson (1859-1930), a master craftsman in the British Arts and Crafts movement. A nice feature, and one rarely seen, is the twist added to the handles-perhaps to give the carrier a better grip as it is a large, heavy tray. Pearson stamped his mark onto the back at both ends. The tray measures 647 mm (25.5 inches) in length, including the handles, and 393 mm (15.5 inches) in width. It weighs 2.8 kgs, just over 6 lbs. It is in very good condition and...

This bronze medal was issued in 1816, to commemorate the bicentenary of William Shakespeare's death. After its issue, the medal had been split in half, with both pieces now forming the lid and base of a brass box. The two pieces are each set in a half of the box and both are backed with a thin sheet of steel. The inside of the box appears to have been silvered originally, but much of it has now worn away. It was probably made as a snuff box, which would have been a good talking point as it was p...

This very attractive pair of Old Sheffield Plate candlesticks were made in Sheffield by the firm of Henry Wilkinson & Co. They stand 290 mm (11.5 inches) high, and are in very good condition, with only minimal wear to the silver on some of the high points of the base. They are of very good quality, weigh in at two kilos (4.5 pound) for the pair, and have a lovely soft colour to them. Wilkinson's firm started in around 1830 and registered the cross keys mark in 1836. In 1843 Wilkinson's were awar...
