This straw work needlecase was made in the early part of the nineteenth century and was decorated by applying individual pieces of dyed straw on to a cardboard base to form an intricate pattern. Items like this were made by French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars to obtain money for necessities, but they had also been made both prior to, and after the wars. The needlecase is 60 mm (2.5 inches) long, 25 mm (1 inch) wide and 10 mm (3/8th of an inch) thick and is in good condition, but s...

Decorated with an underglaze blue and white chinoiserie pattern, this earthenware punch bowl has been attributed to the Herculaneum factory of Liverpool. The unusual and strikingly deep border is printed inside and out and measures roughly 65 mm, or 2.5 inches. Plate 148 in Alan Smith's "The Illustrated Guide to Liverpool Herculaneum Pottery 1796 - 1840" shows a very similar border on a punch bowl. It has been noted that the central pattern was used by the partnership of William and John Turner ...

This very attractive French silver cake slice, or dessert spoon, features an embossed silver handle and a silver gilt blade. The French silver mark showing the head of Minerva is stamped on the handle where it joins the blade. The stamp fails to show the fineness of the silver, whether it is 925 parts per 1000, or 800 parts per 1000, so I will assume 800 parts per 1000. The blade is decorated with hand engraved lines to the outer edge that were done before it was gilded, and it also carries the...

This is a very pretty English porcelain boat shaped inkstand. The exterior is coloured an apple green, whilst the interior is decorated with sprays of hand painted flowers, all sitting on a leaf moulded and ribbed base which is enhanced with gilding. Unfortunately the liner and lid are now missing. The length is 117 mm (4.5 inches), the width 57...
