This large, very colourful, Gien Faience, or majolica jardiniere measures 510mm in length, is 295mm wide and stands 180mm high. Coloured by hand, it is in very, very good condition. It does have some scratches on the inside, as you would expect, where pots etc. have stood over the last 145 years, but nothing of any great concern. There is also a small, shallow star crack to the base, as shown in the photo of the mark, but it doesn't come through to the inside. Made in France, it dates from the p...

This Copeland Spode jug & basin set is decorated in a pseudo Japanese style made popular after Japan was opened up to the West from the late 1850's. Japanese art was wildly popular from the 1860's onwards and its influence was felt for many decades after that, influencing the Aesthetic Movement, amongst others. This set is decorated with hand coloured and gilded scenes of storks or cranes on the ground and in the air. The scenes on the jug are sitting below a band of stylised and gilded chrysant...

This very attractive sterling silver card case with a hinged top, was made by Edward Smith of Birmingham in 1853. Smith was a good maker, noted for making card cases decorated with engine turning and engraving. Interestingly, although it was made in 1853, it carries an engraved name of W Wilson 1867. Inside the case is a visiting or calling card for Mr J D Wilson, presumably a descendant of W Wilson, with details of the case written in pencil on the reverse. The card case is 83mm long, 50mm wid...

This large Bois Durci ink stand features an intricately moulded base, upon which sit two glass inkwells and a central urn shaped container. The glass inkwells are fitted with bois durci tops set into silver plated mounts and collars. The urn shaped container has been gilded and the lid and handles are inset with a duck egg blue enamel. These two pieces of Gorham sterling silver flatware are decorated with the Versailles pattern, which was introduced in 1888. The butter knife, or possibly a pickle knife, is 165 mm (6.5 inches) in length and weighs 34 gms. The spoon measures 153 mm (6 inches) in length, 38 mm (1.5 inches) across the bowl, and weighs 29 gms. Both pieces are in good condition, but the spoon appears to have had something dropped across the bowl, very slightly distorting the edges. Both pieces carry the Gorham mark ...

With a tap at both ends, this very attractive majolica spirit barrel would have once stood on a stand and held two different spirits. Its rather more subtle majolica palette, indicates to me that this piece is of European manufacture. The only mark is an impressed B, but I have been unable to attribute it to any one maker. The length is 153 mm (6 inches) and it measures 127 mm (5 inches) in diameter. It is in very good condition apart from the loss of one of its pewter taps and the stand. C1890.

The raised decoration on this impressive majolica jardiniere was formed in separate moulds and then applied by hand. This is called sprigging. After these sprigs were fired onto the body they were then glazed with the majolica glazes. Possibly French, it carries the number 2016 incised into the base, and a small impressed mark. I have been unable to attribute it to a maker. The jardiniere stands 395 mm (15.5 inches) high and has a diameter of 440 mm (17.5 inches). It weighs in at 8.75 kgs (19.3 ...
