This large Shelley Harmony Ware wall charger is decorated with a fabulous Art Deco sunburst design-the pattern being 8823A, the A standing for Amber colourway. The way it was decorated was that the powdered colours were mixed with turpentine and then applied. The piece was then spun on a wheel with the centripetal force spreading the glaze. The distance achieved depended on the consistency of the glazes, and the dispersion could also be stopped by the decorators breathing on the glaze. While I w...

This good quality sterling silver card case was made by Edward Smith of Birmingham in 1854. Both sides are decorated with the same richly engraved pattern where the centre panel features a cornucopia of fruit and the surrounding panels depict flowers and foliage. Clay is pressed into a very shallow mould, gently teased out, and then carefully applied by hand to the body of the jug, before the piece is fired and glazed. There ar...

This gourd shaped vase is from Doulton Burslem's Corolian Ware line that was made from 1891-1902 and came from the studio of Robert Allen, a very talented designer and painter. The decoration was achieved using the sgraffito method, where the vase was first coated in the rich cobalt blue ground, then the ground was removed with dry brushes exposing the white body to form the flowers. It has been done most delicately and the raised gilt highlights, another Allen speciality, were then added. The p...
