The Ashbourne pattern (pattern 8524) that decorates this Shelley cake plate was designed by Walter Slater and introduced in 1912. It is on the Gainsborough shape and its condition is excellent. The colours and gilding are still vivid, however it does some very minor wear to a small area of enamel in the centre of the plate. C1912-6.

This Royal Doulton ewer was decorated by Bessie Newbery, who started at Doulton in 1882. She was an assistant to many of the great Doulton artists, and during the period 1914-24 she designed her own pieces. On this classical Greek shaped ewer, she has produced a tube lined decoration of a large rose and a rosebud, which together with the foliage, sits on a mottled blue ground. The design number is 7816. This rare Shelley parian bust is of Sir John French Commander-in-Chief of the Expeditionary Forces in World War 1. It is from the set of eight World War 1 Allied leaders and would date from around 1916 as it bears the "Late Foley" backstamp.
