The hallmarks on the front of the base are slightly worn, but the marks on the other components are very crisp as can be seen in the photos below. This is a very pretty English porcelain boat shaped inkstand. The exterior is coloured an apple green, whilst the interior is decorated with sprays of hand painted flowers, all sitting on a leaf moulded and ribbed base which is enhanced with gilding. It would have sat on a lady's desk with the two tubes holding her quills or pens, and the ink residing in the lidded liner inserted into the round hole. Unfortunately the liner and lid are now missing...

This beautifully made wooden paper knife features as the handle, a violin scroll end and peg box. Joined to this is the long blade which is probably walnut, or possibly olive wood. Whether the handle is made from the scroll end of a violin, I don't know-perhaps it was made for a musician or a music lover. The length is 396 mm (15.5 inches) and it is 32 mm (1.25 inches) wide where the handle joins the blade. It is in wonderful condition...

This very attractive early nineteenth century inlaid rosewood veneer desk set stands 72mm high, is 240mm long and 140mm wide. The base for the veneer appears to be mahogany. Internally there is a central lidded cavity with an ivory knob, flanked by two glass inkwells and in front of the inkwells are two spaces, one lidded, for pens. The two internal lids appear to be replacements. The top folding lid has warped slightly...

Both pieces are decorated with the leaves and blossoms of an Australian eucalypt tree done with vigour and style. The very fine detail shows the ribs of the leaves and the stamens of the flowers. The seal is decorated on both sides, whilst the letter opener is only decorated on one side...

This sterling silver handled paper knife features a blade of Mother-of-pearl. Due to the fragility of the blade, these are much rarer than those with more durable blades. Made in Birmingham in 1908, it is in excellent condition, with only a couple of very small nicks in the blade to mar its beauty. Unfortunately my photography skills don't show the blade to its best advantage, but it does possess lovely colour and figure. The whole piece is 255mm long and 20mm wide at the very end of the blade.
