Offered is a scarce and desirable early 18th Century French brass candlestick, circa 1720 - three centuries old now, and still lovely. This piece has good size at about 9 1/2 inches (24 cm) tall. A very similar example is on page 187 of "The Brass Book" by the Schiffers, who note that "this high-domed, faceted, octagonal base is typically French."

The plinth of this candlestick is cast in two parts and seamed (see detail pictures) while the base appears to be spun and raised. Condition overall is fairly good, and typical of brass candlesticks of this period. There are the usual small areas of separation along the seams, perhaps from escaping gas during the joining of the two halves of the plinth. This is normal, and the plinth is sturdy and solid. The stick leans very slightly, though much less than is often seen, and should pose no issues in terms of use. The base rests well on the table, with only minimal wobble. This piece has a nice mellow patina. It is more and more difficult to find these early French candlesticks, and this one is a fine example of the form.
