Offered is a rare and important early American coin silver sugar tongs by Chambersburg, Pennsylvania clockmaker and silversmith Charles Young (fl. 1791-1833), circa 1791-1800. It is extremely unusual to find such early American silver from a Chambersburg craftsman, and these tongs are an exceptional example of Charles Young's work, which is exceedingly rare. These tongs are marked with a clear strike of Charles Young's maker's mark once on each arm, and the tongs are also decorated with a period engraved script monogram of "NP" within an ovoid reserve. The tongs also feature decoration along the edges from end to end, and acorn-form grips. This pair of sugar tongs measures about 6 1/2 inches in length and weighs about 41 grams. Condition is very good overall, with modest wear from normal use and no bends, splits or repairs. Please review all five pictures. All in all a lovely and important example of very early Chambersburg coin silver!
