Offered is a good early Southern coin silver soup ladle by noted Kentucky silversmith Samuel Wheritt (born 1799, died 1877), who apparently trained in Lexington (possibly under Samuel Ayres) and who worked on his own in Richmond from 1824 into perhaps the 1870s. This piece measures a bit over 13 inches in length and weighs a heavy 198 grams. It is decorated with a period engraved set of script initials and features a well-struck, legible maker's mark. By style, it should date to the 1820s or 1830s, but could be a few years later. Condition overall is fair, with a lot of shallow dents to the bowl, but no splits or repairs. All in all a good example of a large Kentucky coin silver serving piece by a desirable maker!
