David Gauld (Scottish, 1865-1936) - Painting of Four Calves Resting. Oil on canvas. Canvas size: 24 inches x 36 inches. Signed in lower right, D. Gauld. Late 19th or early 20th century. In this adorable work, the Scottish painter David Gauld has portrayed four young calves resting in the shade by a watering tub in a Scottish pasture. David Gauld was a native of Glasgow and is well known for his studies of cattle. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and shared a studio with the portrait painter, Harrington Mann. His paintings have been said to bridge the gap between the Glasgow Boys and Art Nouveau. He was a member of, and exhibitor at, the Royal Scottish Academy; the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts; and the Aberdeen Artists' Society. Condition is excellent and the painting has been cleaned recently and touched up. It retains a label from Bourne Gallery, Reigate, Surrey.
