Rarely do I get a 19th C. cloth doll that has a drawn or embroidered face that is smiling. It has puzzled me because I think if I were making a doll for my child I would make it smiling. Then I started thinking about bisque and china dolls and most of their faces are neutral or pensive but no big smiles. Interesting! So there you have it. This cloth doll as a broad smile drawn in blue ink as well as a line for her nose and round eyes. She has been carefully and delicately mended down the middle of her fade. She has evidence of one or two other faces over this one and possibly a face under this one. It feels like she has jointed legs, they bend well but her bloomers are sewn on so I can't see. She is firmly stuffed with cotton. Her legs are covered with black silk stockings that are sewn on and the velvet shoes that have lost all of their pile. She has a brown velvet very worn cap or bonnet that is also sewn on. She is 18" tall and is circa 1880. I think her name is Sunshine.
