This is a very interesting early homespun linen pocket. These pockets were tied around the waist over the woman's petticoat but under her skirt. There would have been a slit in the side seam of her hand sewn skirt to access the pocket. This pocket was not probably worn by a wealthy woman but more than likely a modest hard working woman, the pocket tells us that. The pocket has been pieced and the pattern is interrupted telling that the pocket was made from worn already embroidered fabric that was probably a bed hanging from 1700's. When no longer respectable as a bed hanging the embroidered homespun linen was reused by cutting and piecing together the better areas and making it into a sewing pocket. This is a very large early one with some staining but shows that is was used. It is 20" long and 15" wide at the bottom. It is circa 1800-1820
