Beecher dolls were designed by Julia Jones Beecher and made by a Elmira NY women's church group from 1892-1910 as a fund raiser. It is the reason for a variety of suttle details in the making of these dolls. It is not unusual to have lots of what looks like wear on their faces. The stockinette when stretched over cheeks and noses caused stress in the stockinette and the fabric was compromised from iron oxide used in making the black die. It is for that reason that many antique black cloth dolls have weakness and holes in their faces. This doll has several areas on cheeks and nose. She has a pretty face with nice eyes. Her body is all original and in good shape other than her mitten hands. One hand has lost most of the covering fabric and the other is just rough on the end. She is wearing a pink calico dress and white apron with bloomers underneath. The dress has been on her a long time and conforms to her body and the wear. She is 20" and a very nice powerful black cloth doll. Circa 1893-1910
