This early cloth doll is beautifully made, all hand sewn, very firmly packed with cotton and maybe rags also, and is reinforced with a wooden stick so her head stable, no back and forth wobble. Her face is precious with bead eyes and embroidered raised nose and mouth. The back half of her head is covered with brown cotton and gathered a bit at the back of her neck and I think it is original and is representing hair or a cap. Her body is lanky with long arms and legs that are fully jointed. She has on a blue and white checked soft cotton dress of the period, and pantaloons and a flannel bodice that has been on her a long time. Because her arms have been repaired with linen tape and glue they are not as flexible so I stopped trying to get the bodice off for the pictures. There is no question her body is all original. (She is wearing a bonnet I gave her.) Hands down she is a very special wonderful doll. 25" and circa 1870-80
Forgot, the stains are old and I am guessing it was water. She has no odor and smells fresh.
