This is a very detailed, fine quality watercolor painting of a cathedral interior, probably in France, judging from the headwear of the female figures in the compostion. I cannot find a signature but almost certainly this would be by a listed artist. The painting was probably created in the 1840's or 1850's at latest. There is unusually good handling of the light in the interior of the church, and the detail is phenomenal. In fact, it is so detailed that this work apparently fooled a previous owner, as there is a typed label on the reverse which is quite amusing: it says that this is an "Aqua tint--an etching with aqua fortis (nitric acid) giving the effect of a water color or India ink drawing, also the engraving so made". All that is incorrect. I guarantee absolutely that this is, in fact, a hand drawn, original watercolor work, and not a print of any kind. Compare with the work of artists like Samuel Prout and others. Measurements are 16" by 12" and 22" by 18" framed.
